Quick Daily Liver Cleanse

For the last couple of months I have been fascinated by the human liver. Did you know that the liver has more than five hundred functions in the body? "Your four-and-a-half pound liver manufactures 13,000 chemicals and has 2,000 enzyme systems, plus thousands of synergists that help the body function." says Liz Lipski, PhD in her book Digestive Wellness.

Among the liver's five hundred functions are:

  • Detoxing, cleansing, and purifying blood
  • Producing and excreting bile
  • Activating enzymes
  • Excreting bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones and drugs
  • Storing glycogen, vitamins and minerals
  • Synthesizing plasma proteins
  • Producing aminoacids.

It is also one of the few organs that can regenerate itself. However, repetitive damage and severe toxins like pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, alcohol, and dyes can lead to liver failure, dysfunction, cancer, and ultimately even death. Once I realized how many bodily functions my poor liver has to orchestrate on a daily basis, I began looking into ways that I could relieve some of the stress it is constantly under.

After some research I discovered that there are quite a a number of various cleanses available to support the detoxification process of the liver. Some of them are more involved than others. There are ten day cleanses that include vegetable juice, water and vitamin C, there are sauna treatments, mud baths, or castor oil packs. However my favorite morning cleanse is very gentle, non-invasive and simple.

Every morning when I wake up I drink a large glass of water with half a lemon squeezed in it. This is before I brush my teeth, eat any breakfast, or get dressed. I take no ice with the water and make sure it is room temperature so that it does not cause a shock to my system.

What for? The liver flushes toxins out of our bloodstream while we are asleep- in fasting mode. Lemon water aids the flushing of the toxins and free radicals from the liver.

Natasha Campbell, MD, explains that "Everyday our bodies go through a 24 hour cycle of activity and rest, feeding and cleaning up (detoxifying). From 4 am till 10 am the body is in the cleaning up or in detoxification mode. [...] Start the day with a glass of still mineral water or filtered water with a slice of lemon. It can be warm or cold according to personal preference." Page 109

I have noticed that as consequence I am more awake, have a better digestive response to my food throughout the day, and am less likely to develop migraines or headaches.

This ritual is very important in the morning but save the other half of lemon for the glass of water you will have with dinner or lunch. It will help you digest better and absorb you meal slower which gives your body a steady flow of glucose rather than a spike.

In the winter time nothing is more delicious than a hot cup of tea with a lemon slice and some grated ginger. The combination of the two is especially helpful when dealing with cravings, sugar addictions, a sore throat, or an upset tummy.

You should really only use filtered water for this beverage. Fluoride and chlorine are toxins! If you don't have a good water filter let the water sit for five or ten minutes on the counter, since some chemicals will dissipate when exposed to air.

Begin your morning with a lovely glass of lemon water and give thanks for your amazing liver!

  1. I read about drinking lemon-water in the morning on the Hyperemesis forums too. It's gentle enough that you can do this while pregnant right?

  3. I used to do this. I'm not sure how or why I got out of the habit. I will strive to pick it back up again.

I wish my lemon tree would grow!

  4. I do this practice every morning, but I also oil pull every morning. I usually oil pull first, then drink my warm glass of lemon water and have always wondered if this the correct order. Would you recommend the lemon water before oil pulling?

    1. Definitely afterwards:) What a great combination! I don't do oil pulling as often as I would like to. Your comment inspired me to start it up again on a more regular basis!

  5. Thanks for the great reminder! I am so sporadic with this...I don't have any fresh lemons right now though. Do limes have the same effect? I seem to have those on hand more often and have wondered if you can use them interchangeably.

    1. I think you can if there are no lemons available. From what I have read lemons are more acidic and contain more vitamin C, limes are sweeter and contain a higher amount of vitamin A. The acidity of the lemon seems to be very important for detoxifying the body so maybe you can use a whole lime for your water as opposed to half to make it more acidic:)

  7. I have read about this before but haven't gotten into the habit. You have inspired me. I understand why you should do this first thing - definitely before you eat anything - but why do people always make sure to say "before brushing your teeth"? Does that do something that lessens the effects of the lemon water? Just curious.

    1. Kristina,
Great question. I am not sure why. I don't think it would be problem to brush your teeth before drinking the lemon water unless you tend to swallow some of the toothpaste.I sometimes brush my teeth before I drink my lemon water and I have not noticed a difference:)

    2. I have always heard that it is a good idea to brush your teeth after consuming something really acidic like lemon juice, to protect the enamel of your teeth. Maybe that's why?

      Delete
    3. Actually, you might like to double check that advice. I have read it is the other way around. You brush first thing in the mornjng because the acidic foods soften enamal and if you brush after you will brush it away. Bye bye enamel. Once it is gone, it doesn't come back.

    4. Ugh typos. It is this onscreen touchpad thingy. I can't do it right! Don't let the fact that I spelled enamel wrong stop you from double checking how to protect your teeth. :)

  14. Does it matter how much lemon u use? (you mention both a slice and half a lemon...)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are right I do mention both. Natasha Campbell recommends a slice. I use more than that because I enjoy my lemon water a little bit more acidic, plus it is the acidity that promotes detoxification:)But try both and see which one works better for you. Some people like their lemon water more acidic than others.

  16. With the exception of the skin, the liver is the largest organ in the body and performs well over 500 functions, far more than any other organ in the body. We cannot expect to be healthy or recover quickly from illness without a strong, clean well-functioning liver.Fasting

  18. I've been making a quart of water with 1/4 c lemon juice (a couple of drops of liquid stevia) and a couple drops of lemon essential oil. I drink on that all day when I don't want to drink regular water. I have no idea what it's doing for my system, but it sure is refreshing!
